NFL Draft: Small School Player Rankings by Position
As a small school scout this year, I believe we will see many small school players drafted or signed as a undrafted free agent. In the NFL today, there are 260 total small school players who have made a roster and are still currently on a roster. That equals out to about 8 players on a roster, who played for a small school. The Jacksonville Jaguars lead the league with 17 players on their roster. Last year they drafted Cecil Shorts of Mount Union who went off the board in the 4th round with the 114th pick. There are several players who have been climbing draft boards with great performances at All-Star games.
Players such as Ricardo Lockette of Seattle Seahawks is a player who last year showed off his skills at the HBCU Bowl in Atlanta and was able to use his long arms and quick feet to impress scouts at the event. Lockette is still currently on the Seattle roster, and is one of 55 players that made an NFL roster from a small school. Will there be another Victor Cruz or Fred Jackson in the making? Check out my small school rankings, by position and then take a vote to see what player is your favorite. With rosters moving to 90 to start camp, many small school players will get a better opportunity.

gotta be Janoris Jenkis or Janzen Jackson
if either had their head on straight when they were at their SEC school they’re top 20 picks at one point.
Jenkins still might be a first rounder, but Jackson I thought was the better player in college. If he’s a 4th or 5th rounder and he’s serious about football, he’ll be a true steal.
Last night, a comedian died in New York. Somebody knows why. Somebody knows

Janzen will be a 3rd round selection at best because if he tears it up on Pro day or the combine(if he gets invited)
He’ll be a true steal because when we was playing along side of Eric Berry They were the best Duo Safety in the SEC in my Opinion
I totally agree with you, Janzen is a special kid, and was invited to the NFL Combine, so it will be fun to see

I have never had the opportunity to play so what could you tell me about him? Is he more of a SS or FS prospect? Also what are your thoughts on Brian Quick?
On Ed Reed:
"I’ve told him to his face many times, ‘You’re the greatest safety ever to play the game,’"
"We all learn from each other, but we all learn most from him."
- Troy Polamalu
Janzen Jackson is a hard hard hitting safety, they used him a ton on blitzes when he was a Freshman for Tennessee. He was a 5 star recruit coming out of Louisiana and has been a very good safety. I would say he is more of a free safety, he is more a ball hawking player, but could be effective in the run game as well. I could see him more as a free safety though. He can hit extremely hard, but has had some issues off the field.
As for Brian Quick he is a lanky WR, who has very good balance and hand-eye coordination. He is very good at running after the catch, and is not the easiest player to tackle. He needs to get stronger in his legs, but he is a very good wide out.

Appreciate it. Quick was on my radar a bit as someone I liked, but did not hear about jackson. Thanks for the information.

Here's my USA Today write-up on Jackson
9. Janzen Jackson, McNeese State
Ht: 6’0, Wt: 190 pounds
Strengths: Jackson is a terrific athlete for a safety and moves around effortlessly. He’s a strong tackler and is good coming up to support the run. Good speed for the position to close on the ball. Good hands. Reliable, hard hitting tackler.
Weaknesses: Jackson was expected to be the next Eric Berry at Tennessee but was dismissed for personal issues. Landed at McNeese State and didn’t stand out. Extreme boom or bust potential.
Projected pick: Third round
Mocking the Draft: Talking NFL Draft all year.
IT would be a smart move for him

Matt Veldman North Dakota St.
Huge TE will not be drafted but make a roster and eventually work into a starter, then he’ll have a break out season, the first of many, propelling his very lucky team to the superbowl 5 times in a row, and become a 10 time pro-bowler on his way to Canton.
Wolf. Wolfgang Wolf
I like your a fan of his, that is great, not sure about 5 superbowls in a row, but the kid is a gamer.

I don't count ...
…Jenkins as a small school guy. He put himself on the radar in the SEC. I voted for Hamilton. He is raw, but had 20.5 sacks. He was a God among insects in that division.

Thanks for that input, I too agree that Adrian Hamilton will be a stud on this list. He amazes me more and more, every time I watch his film. When he started this season no one was talking about him, except me. He finished with 20.5 sacks and I had put in the leg work to call the NCAA and confirm that he had broke the record. They had him at 19.5 and he actually had 22 sacks, but the NCAA gave him credit for 20.5. The kid is special and was taught tons of moves by Gabe Northern the former Buffalo Bills 2nd round pick from LSU

OMG this guy is so good.
He looks MUCH more polished than any of the consensus top guys. And he’s just as big and just as athletic. Dude looks like a can’t miss guy.
If you have never saw a video on Adrian you need to check it out on Youtube the kid is nasty

Jenkins is an SEC player, doesn't count
Jonathan Grimes all the way. He’s fantastic. Extremely productive. He can catch, block, run, he’s the whole package.
But it really says something that WM had a RB and TE prospect and still couldn’t make the playoffs.
Have seen Bo Levi play a few times.
Always have been pretty impressed. I think he could definitely be a very good backup in the league, with a chance to become more.
I dont count Jenkins as a small school guy either
I voted other. I think Amini Silatolu will be the first guy from the list to become a legit starter in the NFL.
"At this point, what we got to lose, right? So we might as well throw caution to the wind and hit people in the face."
--Vikings DE Jared Allen
Amini could be a starter right away, I wouldn’t doubt it, the kid is a tough competitor and is hungry. I wish he wasn’t hurt and we could have seen him play at the Senior Bowl.

Nice work BTW
There’s some talent on this list. Especially in the secondary.
"At this point, what we got to lose, right? So we might as well throw caution to the wind and hit people in the face."

Asa Jackson has been a very productive CB, this year, he is a good cover corner. He still had a little trouble at the Senior Bowl but was able to regroup and handle his own. He will be a good corner, but I think there are still small school guys above him.
Trumaine was invited to the combine, per another scout but I don’t know why he didn’t go. It would have helped him if he was healthy because he is an extremely talented player. He is a good cover corner and is very physical.
Christian Thompson of SC State, is a very good safety, they had a very good tandem with both Dominique Ellis and CT. Thompson is a hard hitter that is very good in run support and does a great job at tackling. He reminds me of Donte Whitner, he is good in run, but a little suspect in pass coverage.

Any opinions on Jake Long's brother?
I doubt he’ll ever be an LT, but it seems plausible that he could make something of himself as an RT if a team takes a chance on him and grooms him.
"You've got to respect your opponent, no matter who it is. You respect him best by going out there and beating him up." - Calvin Johnson
DT Akiem Hicks, Regina ( Former LSU Tiger)
At 6’4 324 Hicks certainly has the size to be a force. He had some good moments during the East-West Shrine Game.
HBCU product DT Chigbo Anunoby, Morehouse 6’4 325, will more than likely become an UDFA. Some team might find a gem in this run stuffing prospect.
CB Chris Greenwood, Albion(Mich), looks like an UDFA at this point. He struggled with off man coverage at The Shrine Game. There was a picture of him being stiff armed by WR Tim Benford. What the photograph did not show was Greenwood fighting through that stiff arm to make the tackle.
During his time at Albion, Greenwood displayed some versatilty by returning punts. This DivIII All-American has size 6’1 186; and speed 4.39. As an UDFA, Greenwood may be a steal.
You are right, all three of those guys are good prospects, If you have never saw a Chigbo workout you have to google his name, the kid is something else. When it comes to work out warrior he really is a monster. I agree with you about Greenwood, he too will be a PFA in my opinion. He will have a choice where to pick, but all three of those guys are good. Hicks played in Canada and is very impressive, and long armed. I agree it could be a great draft for small school guys

EJ Nduka - Sam Houston State University
EJ Nduka another DE /OLB tweener under the radar but definitely turned several heads at the NFL Regional Combine in Houston. Very athletic, explosive and physical kid.
Watched his highlight tape and the kid can effortlessly get to the QB and stop the run. I believe most of the clips where actually against Baylor.
6’4 250lbs DE/OLB Hybrid
I actually heard he killed the Regional in Houston. I know a kid that was there with him, who said he was smoking every drill. I didn’t know his name but that is good to find out. Nduka had a decent season as well coming out of Sam Houston and he has the size and speed
