What's the value of Ryan Mallett?
Remember Ryan Mallet?
Leading up to the 2011 NFL Draft, few signal callers were more widely debated than the 6 foot 7 gunslinger. Then, in late April, he was taken off the board in the third round by Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots only to be buried on the depth chart and not heard from all season long.
Now, the week before the Patriots are set to battle for football's greatest prize, the former Arkansas Razorback has found his way into the news. Mallett has dropped roughly 15 pounds off of his 253 combine weigh-in with improved conditioning this season, according to CSN New England. The report also noted that Bill Belichick has been impressed with some of Mallett's throws in practice.
Of course, like anything in today's era, these reports have caused a slew of speculation about Ryan Mallett's value, either with the Patriots down the road or in a trade with any number of quarterback-hungry teams.
Rotoworld's Evan Silva speculated that Mallett would be worth a second round pick and cited the Jacksonville Jaguars as a potential trade partner in the following tweet:
After he fell so far in draft, Mallett has bargain-basement deal. Vertical team with solid O-Line like #Jaguars ought to offer 2nd-rd pick.
— Evan Silva (@evansilva) February 3, 2012
After the jump, find out why no team, especially the Jaguars should even consider this.
We've seen this before, right? A team drafts a quarterback between rounds two and seven, despite having a solid starter in place, with the goal of developing them into a quality backup. Said quarterback then comes out and has a few decent preseason games, maybe makes a regular season appearance or two and draws praise from the coaching staff. The trade rumors begin to fly shortly thereafter.
Matt Schaub was drafted in the third round by the Atlanta Falcons before being traded to Houston for two second rounders and a swap of first round selections. The New England Patriots turned a seventh round pick, Matt Cassel, into a second round pick in a trade with Kansas City, while Kevin Kolb and Charlie Whitehurst were also moved for draft choice before truly proving themselves in the NFL.
So, why not Mallett?
For starters, Mallett doesn't have nearly as much experience as any of the above players had before being traded. Mallett played sparingly in the preseason against scrubs, and didn't look all that impressive doing it. He hasn't even done enough to supplant Brian Hoyer as Tom Brady's backup, and we want to talk about teams that should trade for him? Let's not forget that Mallett had serious pocket presence, mobility and accuracy concerns coming out of Arkansas, not to mention the personality issues that caused him to drop to the third round. There is very little evidence that he is any less of a hot head, and even less evidence that he has improved on any of the areas of his game.
I know what you might be thinking: "The New England Patriots and Bill Belichick are the best at developing quarterbacks and straightening out character concerns." This is one of the most puzzling myths out there. They developed Tom Brady, and that's it. Matt Cassel has been very average in Kansas City, and Brian Hoyer is just a run of the mill backup quarterback. As far as straightening out questionable personalities, Randy Moss and Albert Haynesworth both reverted back to their ways in due time.
People who think Ryan Mallett has trade value at this point will continue to point to the trades that have happened in the past. But other than the Matt Schaub trade in Houston, when have any of those ever really worked out? Furthermore, since when is a second round pick a bargain? Draft picks are valuable, and spending a high pick on a player who has lost some weight and drawn praise from his own coach for work in practice is reckless.
Not a single team in the league had a second round grade on Ryan Mallett, so why would any of them think he is worth that price now? Mallett has done absolutely nothing, and until he does, teams will stay clear of throwing a second round pick New England's way.

I was saying he should have been a first rounder last year
I think a second is cheap for him. He’s got a huge arm, very intelligent, and has studied behind one of the best for the last year. There’s a lot of teams still needing a number 1 QB. Definitely worth it for a team like Cleveland, who could then trade back with Washington, scoop up some more picks, and get a good QB prospect. Plus, Blackmon could still be there at 6. Mallet to Blackmon would be a nice combo for the next 10 years
Drew Brees- the REAL MVP.
The thing is
In all trades with the Pats, the trading partner seems to lose it’s mind and seriously overpay. Regardless of who initiates the trade, it seems the trading partner wants to make the Pats better.
In trades for Patriots players
I am proud of the ‘Skins trade of Haynesworth to NE. It seems rare that anyone ever gets the better end of a Belichick deal, even if it’s just for a 5th or 6th round pick.
A 2nd is definitely too much for Mallett at this point. Maybe if Brady went down for a half-season or more and Mallett played (and played well) in his stead, then it might make sense.
I was confused...
…because I was looking for “Seriously? Heck NO!” button.
Listen, Mallet has some tools and might be worth that pick after a few years of conditioning, practicing/playing at NFL game speed and being fully immersed in a complicated pass happy O like the Pats run. But you would also have to think with Tommy B now a few years the other side of 30 if Bardy shows any inclination of slowing and Mallet does turn out to be worth anything that Belichick would hold onto him. The Pats live by the Branch Rickey credo, “Trade a player a year too early rather than a year too late.”
These idiot franchises need to stop giving the Patriots more and more high draft picks each season. This is what, the 4th straight season they will have about 5-6 picks in the first 3 rounds (including two firsts?)
"Picture Me Rollin"
Seriously
If the Patriots dangle a trade where they get a better pick next draft, these teams have to start understanding that they are getting shafted. Plus they are helping one of the best teams in football. Stop the madness!
Try not to take the above message too seriously.
Exactly. I think it was 2 years ago they had FOUR 2nd round picks in one draft!!!
"Picture Me Rollin"
As a matter of fact, when round 2 of the 2009 Draft began, the Pats had
four second-rounders AND four third-rounders.
They turned two of the third-rounders into second-rounders in 2010.

The Pats will wait until Mallett gets into a game, and shines...then his value is a first round pick
I felt he was a guaranteed first round pick when he was a fresh at Michigan, then thought he was a darkhorse going into his first season at Arkansas.
I was surprised he fell that far but as I mentioned " Ryan Mallett certainly has first round talent, but also have character concerns at the one position it is hard to overlook, ( Quarterback) where increasingly teams are looking for the “first one in, last one to leave” work ethic."
No way he gets traded anytime soon, he hasn’t done anything, but he will – either bad, or good – and then we will know his value.
he could be next years Matt Flynn, or Kevin Kolb, or Matt Schaub
just show a flash, throw 2 TDs to Gronk, one to Hernandez, and one to Welker…..thats all it will take – a four TD, one interception game – and his value is back up to a number one pick. He is on the perfect team, just stand there, and get the ball out of your hand
of course, there is one other time when it worked out
Favre
The only measure of true success in the NFL is the Vince Lombardi trophy. Anything less is a rationalization.
Slightly different scenario
Ron Wolf wanted to draft Favre when he was in NYJ. Atlanta took him with the pick before the jets were on the clock. Wolf landed in GB the following year and traded for Favre. Point is that Wolf wanted Favre all along. I doubt the Jags or any other QB needy teams wanted Mallet or they would have taken him in the 2nd round last year.

STILL this crap about Mallett?
I know anyone who enjoys reading sports journalism loves to speculate, and this article provides plenty of it. The main issue that I’ll point is that Mallett HAD NO ATTITUDE, DRUG OR WORK ETHIC ISSUES. These were allegations leveled after Tony Softli made an allegation he himself based off of an undisclosed “source.” When Fairborn writes this crap, she comes off like a writer for E! or Bravo (yes, I did say she).
What you can level from this article is only from the beginning which certainly takes issue with any attitude or work ethic issues (and most likely the drug allegation). Softli and any “journalist” regurgitating these as though they are factual should name their sources other than “everybody is sayin’ it.”s
I understand this is not the point of the article, but let his lack of experience be the main determinant of whether to trade him and give the bullshit allegations a rest.
Here you go
The issues were there. It was enough of a concern for teams to let him fall to the third round. He admitted to using drugs. What more do you want?

A guy my uncle works with at his golf course...
was a walk-on DB at Michigan when Mallet was there. Says Mallet used to smoke pot literally every day. Take that for what it’s worth

I hear you...
…and you’re correct. Not that I’m attempting to be right when I did knowingly overlook this, but in my mind I was differentiating between drug use and a drug problem. The bigger allegations were about cocaine use, his poor work ethic and attitude about and at other team members. I couldn’t imagine a cocaine addict being even half successful in such a grueling profession.
My point was, they were all over-hyped. At the time, we couldn’t read an article without negative comparisons and Softli’s echoed comment. Then blogging trolls chimed in to boot.
This article just seemed to stir up what I was hoping to no longer have to wade through just to hear a status.
Sorry for the rant.
...and sorry for the name-call.
Poor taste on my part.
No worries
Just didn’t want to come off as unprofessional. I didn’t mean to make the allegations a focus of the piece. Like you said, it’s his inexperience that is keeping him from being worthy of the speculated trade. Thanks for reading and the feedback.

We (Jags) do not have a solid O-line.
Not sure what Silva is thinking. We have a solid C, G, and LT…particularly for run-blocking. We started a rookie G out of desparation, but he might turn out alright. Our RT was a turnstile and very likely half the reason Blaine was running from DE’s on the regular. Many fans are calling for a RT with our #7 pick.
In spite of the O-line issues, our GM would most likely not trade for Mallett. He is (to a fault) very much a stickler for character that is above reproach. Our team is full of mediocre players who are unbelievably good guys…but that hasn’t gotten us to the playoffs, so we’ll see how his experiment turns out.
Along with all of those comments which are right (our rookie LG should be pretty good next year)
we do not have a vertical offense. We currently don’t have the players to run one and haven’t for the last three or four seasons. I don’t know what Jags team he is looking at, but we are a very run heavy team. I definitely wouldn’t trade for Mallet, especially since we haven’t had a second round pick the last two years. We need that value.
No way.
"What do you want to say to those critics now?"
"Just sit back and watch the show." -Cam Newton
Silva's favorite pass time is trashing Gabbert
He knows nothing, he is just a couch bound retweeter.
Gabbert was playing hurt last season as well
MoJo keeps “things that people didn’t know about” when he is defending Blaine in the SB interviews. Mel Taylor was over the top in defending Gabbert during the season, saying “Blaine is extremely courageous” when people questioned his pocket presence. I’m pretty sure they were hiding an injury for at least some portion of the season.
What?
Are you a Jags fan? It was never mentioned that Blaine was “playing hurt last season.” They would have no reason to hide that. In fact, they would have reason to reveal that to a fanbase clamoring for some hope to cling to.
By the way, it’s Mel TUCKER.
Teams aren't really clamoring for Mallet
I think they would be lucky to get a 3rd rounder for him. There are at least 4 QBs in this draft as well as Matt Flynn who are better options for QB needy teams.
If I needed a QB?
Sure why not. A 2nd is nothing if you have nobody to move the football. I mean if Matt Cassel and Kolb (-DRC) are worth 2nds on inflated deals, why the hell not is this guy worth a 2nd on a cheap rookie contract
Winning
I suppose the strategy
of getting a falling QB with upside to net you better pick is a sound one. But that QB needs playing time and BB has Tom Brady. So what the hell is the point of the pick?
Then again teams overvalue crappy QB prospects like Jimmy Clausen so BB must be confident he’ll find one of those.
World Series attitude, champagne bottle life, nothing every changes so tonight is like tomorrow night.
For the point of the pick, see Indy's record, 2011, with no Manning
A good backup is valuable.
I liked Mallett, and thought Clausen showed promise with Carolina. But this is a deep QB draft. I think Mallett and Clausen have value, but not higher than they were taken originally.
2012 NYG mock - 1: Janoris Jenkins CB, 2: Kevin Zeitler G, 3: A.J. Jenkins, WR, 4: Neiko Thorpe S, 5: Vick Ballard RB, 6: Rishard Matthews WR, 6: some random LB, 7: BPA
A rookie QB on the worst team in the league
Carolina two years ago had injuries all over the offense, OL, WR, RB. Rookie WRs with the rookie QB, DeAngelo Williams out half the season. I thought Clausen showed promise. He was better than Matt Moore, and Moore looked decent on a not much better Dolphins team this year.
2012 NYG mock - 1: Janoris Jenkins CB, 2: Kevin Zeitler G, 3: A.J. Jenkins, WR, 4: Neiko Thorpe S, 5: Vick Ballard RB, 6: Rishard Matthews WR, 6: some random LB, 7: BPA
I think that Clauson
Will eventually be picked up by a team and will get a shot at starting some games, could be a huge steal. Like you said, that Carolina team was desimated.

Not sure why people think this is a bad deal
Guys like Schaub, Kolb and Cassel are completely different because teams had to pay them a LOT of money right away. Mallett will still be on a cheap contract for years, and one 2nd rounder is a lot less than what teams traded for some of those other QBs mentioned. Sure he didn’t see game action, but that’s because they have a guy named TOM BRADY in front of him. You really think that a year of tutelage from Tom and Bill Belichick didn’t increase his value at all? This would basically be using a 2nd round pick on a guy who could have easily been a 2nd round pick last year and spent a year getting in shape and learning under some true professionals how to play the game. Makes perfect sense to me.
by Aluminum Penguin on Feb 4, 2012 11:18 AM EST reply actions
Yep I couldnt agree more
Considering a trade involves both the player and the contract, this wouldnt be a bad deal at all. Cheap, big QB who can launch the ball plus a year with hoodie equals a 2 easily.
Winning
Is Mallett going to be traded?
If he’s doing well, I’d think he’s probably in the Patriots future plans. Bradys great but he’s gettin up there.
Wolf. Wolfgang Wolf
While I wouldn't want my team to make this trade...
I think something like this will eventually happen. I thought this was a great pick by NE at the time. As long as Mallett stays out of trouble, his value is only going to go up. Teams are desperate for QBs, someone is going to eventually make this deal, be it this offseason or the next.
Ryan Mallet is sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo slooooooooow
A baseball park is the one place where a man's wife doesn't mind his getting excited over somebody else's curves
The Pats actually had a first-round grade on Mallett based on talent
Obviously, though, there was no chance of the Pats actually using a first on him.
But when they saw that he was inexplicably still there in the third, they took him.
