2012 NFL Draft: Jeff Fisher open to Rams moving No. 2 pick
While making the rounds during Super Bowl week, head coach Jeff Fisher told Bernie Miklasz of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch he'd be to the Rams trading the No. 2 overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.
"There are going to be teams that have some interest in that pick," Fisher told Miklasz. "What we do will define the future of this franchise moving forward. If we stay there who do we take, if we move down who do we take. What if we move down and come back up. That's going to define the future."
Fisher also vowed that this year would be the last the Rams would have the second pick in the draft. If true, it would be an accomplishment in and of itself. The Rams have had the first or second pick four times in the last five years.
But back to having the No. 2 pick right now. Here's what I wrote about it in my last mock draft:
The Rams will be taking several phone calls to trade out of this pick. While adding picks would be nice for the Rams, having a franchise left tackle is the most important piece this team can add. If the Rams trade down to a team wanting Robert Griffin III, they won't be able to get a player as good as (offensive tackle Matt) Kalil. That's what the Rams will be choosing between. If they want Sam Bradford to develop, they need Kalil more than anything else. He would start at left tackle with Rodger Saffold shifting to the right side.
That's right, I put the word "add" twice in one sentence. But I remain confident in the opinion on what the Rams should do. The Rams could get a bounty of picks to trade out, but they shouldn't pass up Kalil. Don't let the bad pick of Jason Smith cloud whether or not they should draft Kalil. This is a completely different front office (which doesn't even have a general manager, which really makes this discussion fruitless).

Kalil no question. This team was honestly not that many pieces short of being a good team. Injuries and coaching were the real downfalls (and another decent corner). Bradford, Jackson, and Lloyd are great pieces to build around and the defense is solid. No need for the trade down.

I say trade down if possible
Any team can use 5-7 extra picks in the draft and not one player is worth that much imo.

Completely disagree...
they need to upgrade the Oline, DT, LB, CB, WR, and need to find a replacement for Jackson immediately. Lots of pieces short.
@troycarson
I think they should go with a Kicker

I am intrigued by
the comment of trading down and then back up. Could the Rams be interested in moving down for a collection of picks (say with Washington) and then moving back up to trade with the Vikes so they can draft Kalil? The only problem here is I think the Vikes want Kalil as much as the Rams do.
If they get an early 1st I say they should.
Pull the trigger and get Riley Ratiff as a consolation prize and be happy with the several extra picks you’ll get.
And the home of the .... JETS!!!
Now lets get a G-D snack!!!

It is going to be very interesting
Teams know that the Rams are not going to take RG3. So they could talk to the Vikings instead. They would have to pay less to move up to the #3 spot.
If I am the Vikings I would say come to the #3 spot for less.
But this is where it gets interesting because the Rams could fool some teams into believing that another team is going up to #2.
Either way it is good for the Vikings. If the Rams trade down the Vikings get Kalil. If not then the Vikings trade down.
I find it interesting...
Every outlet seems to have Kalil as the consensus #1 tackle… except Mayock. He has Reiff ahead of him. He seems to have a couple rankings that go against the grain every year (Earl Thomas over Eric Berry, etc). Found that interesting.
Kalil
I think we can all agree that Kalil is the best LT available, but there are 2 other very good quality LTs that are projected top 10 as well… I’m a Seahawk fan, so of course I hope the Rams blotch this pick, but from a football prospective Jonathan Martin and Riley Reiff are good quality LTs. If the Browns are in fact one of the teams vying for RG3 with their 2 first round picks (one being #4), if they are willing to deal those 2 first round picks and perhaps even a 3rd round pick, I think you have to make that deal, take Reiff at 4 and use pick 22 for another need, WR – Alshon Jeffery, Michael Floyd or Kendall Wright.
