Post-Superbowl Mock Draft.

I have no voice. Still hasn't really hit me yet. Already have gotten the official SB XLVI NYG T-Shirt. Didn't sleep last night. You get the picture.

Won't stop me from mocking though. I am only mocking one trade, St. Louis - Washington. Also going under assumption that Peyton Manning signing with Miami. No reason why, just gut instinct.

You might see some similarities from my last mock...that's because I used the critiques to try and get a better idea of what happens.

Also, just a bit of a disclaimer, the way I do these mocks is by going one pick at a time, with no inkling of who will be available for the team in the next round, just like the real thing. So some players will fall because of positional value and need, while some will rise for the same reason. Only 3 rounds this time, don't want to do more until compensatory picks come out.

I really do not like David Wilson..

I agree that we need a RB and if he is the best on your board, then I approve of the pick, but there are a few other guys that I would much rather have. Wilson runs too side to side for me.

Also, please inform me, who is this Shea McClellin fellow you have us grabbing with our third rounder

    RIP Nick Adenhart

DE/LB from Boise State. Undersized, but athletic and could be a DE/SAM for us.

BPA pick. Really helped his stock at the Senior Bowl.

I have Wilson as the BPA as well. Slightly higher than Doug Martin for running backs.

Well there you go, you have a SAM too

but I just see the Giants trying to get faster and faster, and I would assume somebody like Keenan Robinson or Bradham fit the mold of the SAM that they want to switch to.

by GiantNomad on Feb 6, 2012 7:42 PM EST up reply actions

yeah, I would've liked Robinson more, but he didn't fall to us this time.

I really liked what I saw out of Shea recently, so I just went with him. Bradham would work too, I suppose.

I was also thinking Donte Paige-Moss as well. Raw talent, risky prospect...could pay off in spades though

with the right coaching….and the Giants would be the best team for that when it comes to passrushers.

by BigBlueIntervention on Feb 6, 2012 7:49 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, I think given what we know about the Giants

Paige-Moss is definitely in play. Btw, I didn’t feel the need to comment because it’s almost commonplace now, I do love Dwayne Allen.

given the way the D is trending

I don’t see how McLellin fits. It almost was like Kiwi was phased out of the defense the past few weeks, even against the Niners when he should’ve been playing a lot more to stop the run.

Guys like Bradham and Tank Carder are I think were we go with LBeezers.

I like Bradham too...I just liked the pass rush ability of Mclellin more. I can see Bradham too.

And for the record, I thought that was a mistake by Fewell to not play Kiwi. Carder I see as another Blackburn…great instincts, physically limited, no sideline to sideline.

I think if they go McClellin they are looking at pass rush ability

I’m stealing the Wilson pick for my sig, need to get rid of high OL and find room for a TE.

I would not mind Allen. He’d fit us well.

My QB has 2 rings. Well, 3 if you want to get technical.

2012 NYG mock - 1: Janoris Jenkins CB, 2: David Wilson RB, 3: A.J. Jenkins WR, 4: Kevin Koger TE, 5: Neiko Thorpe S, 6: Rishard Matthews WR, 6: some random LB, 7: BPA

by ct17 on Feb 7, 2012 12:38 AM EST up reply actions

    Changed my mind already

Like Wilson, but I don’t think he falls to us. I’ve adopted Allen instead. He’s got blocking experience, even if it is not necessarily in-line. I’m looking at our opponents, and I see Allen blocking Kerrigan, Spencer, or Babin in the wide9. Some mobility good for blocking those guys.

My QB has 2 rings. Well, 3 if you want to get technical.

    2012 NYG mock - 1: Dwayne Allen TE, 2: Brandon Boykin CB/RS, 3: A.J. Jenkins WR, 4: Vick Ballard RB, 5: Neiko Thorpe S, 6: Rishard Matthews WR/RS, 6: Blake DeChristopher G/T, 7: BPA

by ct17 on Feb 7, 2012 8:30 AM EST up reply actions

    I don't hate Wilson

But if the Giants draft him, he needs to block/receive well.

I don’t know anything about Shea McClellin, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see a DE, but I’d love to see Nigel Bradham (eventual Kiwi replacement) or Harrison Smith in the 3rd.

Why on earth would the Bills

draft a guard in rd 2. I can see Corner,OLB,DE,WR,TE,OT,QB,CB before guard for the Bills in that round.

Sanders may or may not be a tackle...

But I just don’t see him being the pick there, I think Irvin or Tannehill are more likely in that spot. Also if Toon is there in the third, there is no way they pass for a player at a position the coach largely ignores.

I’d prefer Martin over Jones in the second but good work

Oh yes that's right, I'm a Jets fan.

    Jags

before commenting, let me preface by congratulating you on your team’s victory. As a NYer I am kind of happy New England lost, although I do admit I hate both teams and a good portion of the fans I know of each team.

    As for the Jags picks:
1)Coples or Reiff are the two guys I think fit best. Right now, I think I still go Reiff, but solid combine and/or pro-day from Coples and he could become the better pick IMO. I was on the Kirkpatrick bandwagon, but I have cooled off regarding him as of late.

2)Gilmore is a very nice pick. EXCELLENT value and he happens to address a need. Other guys I also like are Fleener and a bunch of WRs(some not even in your first 3 rounds)

3)I can’t say the pick is bad, but there are guys who I definitely feel present themselves as better options with the pick. Tommy Streeter and Cam Johnson are the two guys who stand out to me as potentially being better picks for the Jags in the 3rd round.

    Love the draft for Dallas.

Positionally that is pretty much what I would like. Of course perhaps an even better draft would go Ingram, Ben Jones/Dontari Poe, and then Judie or Boykins. Still though, quite good in my opinion.

If I had a nickel for every Super Bowl the Eagles have won, I would have zero nickels.

    Vikes draft grade: C-

    Matt Kalil—A
    Dwight Jones—F
    Lavonte David—C-

    Should have gone:
    Kalil
    Stephen Gilmore
    Keenan Robinson

    Several reasons

Mainly I don’t agree that Jones is a first round talent, or even top of the 2nd round for that matter. Receivers typically take longer to have an impact on their team than other positions. The Vikings need to address their defense early and often. In fact, after the Kalil pick, I would be happy if the other 9 draft picks were all used on defensive players. I hope the Vikings add a WR in free agency rather than early in the draft.

But yea we’re looking at up to 30mil in cap space this year. We’ll get a WR and a CB at least.

    Don’t like the Mclelin pick

is it his uncontrollable temperament? Or is it his flat out ignorance?

he's not as good an athlete as made out to be

and his production is well, well below subpar for a major BCS school.

Manningham produced like a #1 WR and was a 3rd round pick. JPP isn’t stupid either, that’s a real stupid thing to say. He just was inexperienced.

Burfict is dumb. And he’s got way too many screws loose.

JPP had a reputation of being stupid. He had a low wonderlic score.

That’s what I was referring too.

Burfict has long arms, he’s athletic, he plays a position of need, he can rush the quarterback, and he has a lot of upside.

LIke it or not I think he will intrigue the Giants.

And I didn’t know you knew Burfict personally….

Because if you don’t the interview the Giants will conduct and not you or me will decide whether or not they think he has screws loose. You or I don’t know that, they will do their due diligence and if checks out Burfict is a real possibility for the Giants if he’s available.

wonderlic has nothing to do with overall intelligence

its just a BS football test.

Burfict has long arms yay, he’s not athletic, we don’t need a LB, if he can rush the passer he sure hasn’t done it on Saturdays. I don’t know Burfict at all, but you can’t tell me one way, other then making stuff up or using his high school stats, that he does one thing teh GIants want out of a player.

In fact, he’s the type of player that’s not even on their draft board like Sean Weatherspoon.

    you're almost right.

but the one thing that matches what they love is that the giants like, absolutley love a pottential steal.
and with burfict being the most physically gifted LB in the draft (their kinda player) they will have him high on the board.
if he passes the pre-draft interviews and is still on the board.

and JPP's character and desire on the football field was unquestioned

it was also why we drafted him cuz we knew he’d reach his potential given how hard he worked. He was raw, but he plays like an undersized white dude.

Burfict is lazy, dumb and hurts his team more then he helps it. I dunno why you’re even suggesting he’s a possibility.

Reason I don't like Vontaze is because he is exactly who the Giants don't look for in the first round.

Is he gifted athletically? I wouldn’t be surprised if he blew up the combine….but that’s only one part of the puzzle. He has almost no concept of gap control, has terrible tackling technique (launches himself instead of wrapping up most of the time) and if his disciplinary issue was him being too aggressive, I wouldn’t have a problem. There are reports everywhere about him dogging it in practice, giving up on plays, fighting with coaches. We DO look at character as well when drafting 1st round picks.

Ross, Phillips, Nicks, Pierre-Paul, and Amukamara had no character red flags at all. Pierre-Paul was actually the opposite: http://www.sports-central.org/sports/2011/11/19/the_next_big_thing.php

Sustaining a neck injury during a game and immobilized on a gurney, he was rushed by ambulance to a hospital. Reappearing in the second half with a doctor’s note and “put me back in” pleas, he returned to the field breaking two fingers and collecting three sacks in the process. After winning the game, his dumbfounded coach commented “amazing” as little more than what others were already thinking.

The dude was carried out on a hospital stretcher in the 1st half, and then came back in the 2nd, broke fingers and got sacks. That’s the type of aggression we’re looking for.

    We'll see

I just think it’s silly to rule out Burfict like Roscharch seems to dismiss the possibility the of the Giants entertaining that pick.

And those things you mentioned: gap control, tackling technique can be taught by coaching

I would not be surprised at all if the Giants ended up selecting vontaze Burfict and at the end of round one, It’s not a really big risk. I strongly disliked the thought when the Giants were heading towards the 15th pick, but at 32?

    Pick looks much better.

But again, he’s not MY ideal choice. I like Stephon Gilmore there, I like Allen there, I like Kendall Wright if available. and I like Mark Barron there too (Fewell even with Buffalo ran a ton of 3 Safety sets and the Giants don’t have a 3 Safety right now). I’d be ok with a RB

I’d love to see Kuechly there. That’d be terrific if he feel because of measurables.

I just think it’s crazy to dismiss Burfcit is my point

    Character

Never said JPP had character concerns I said people were making a big deal about his wonderlic. score.

My point is this: Giants fans need to keep an open mind about Burfict because WE are not interveiwing him and spending Hours of background on him. WE don’t know him.

IF he checks out, the Giants may very well draft him if he’s available at 32 overall because his upside is undeniable and the Giants have a stable locker room and great leadership, which is a good fit for Burfict

Eh, I'm still firmly against Burfict based on what I've seen of him. Agree to disagree I suppose.

If we draft him, I will assume Jerry did his homework and I’d be OK with it. But with mock drafts, you pretend to be the GM and based on JR’s draft tendencies, Burfict doesn’t match up. Reading these confirmed my suspicions:

how does that first one turn you off Burfict

What snippets turn you off from Burfict this one:

“Tez Has Heart: It is what makes him great, and terrible, if he can harness this, which is what ASU fans have been saying for three years, he can be unstoppable. Now he has developed a bad reputation, and he gets flags now, for very very questionable calls. Ill show some examples of that on the tape. "

    Or

    this one (from the negatives)

“His size and speed combo lead to huge hits every time he connects with someone, his form tackles are harder than 99% of players kill shots, he doesn’t need to go for those. With proper coaching, this could be corrected. I think this year he is thinking to much about, no penalties, be disciplined, what everyone is saying, his draft stock, and it shows on the field. If a coach can get to him and get him to play the way he can, and be disciplined, tackle with form, try not to hit anyone on the sidelines, he can a special player at the next level.”

What do you think of Barron

Grant is old and Sash might not be able to handle coverage responsibilities and Fewell has used a ton of 3 Safety sets even when in Buffalo, I think Barron could play a with the Giants

The safety depth scares me for the Giants. One injury to Rolle or Phillips and this team is in CC Brown situation again.

Don’t think we take a RB in round 1 unless it’s Richardson. There are too many other options in round 2 and 3. Like 2nd and 3rd round picks but not a fan of the fisrt round

I have a feeling they'll pass on Jenkins if he's there too

The whole Adam Jones thing hasn’t really worked out in their favor, and I don’t think they’ll be looking for his clone in the draft (that’s really more of a gut call than anything else).

Zeitler and Forston were good picks. Even though I like Miller, Marvin Lewis has a thing for workhorse backs so I think he’ll target Martin and Polk in the second.

    Kuechly OLB?

Like how the Board fell, Kuechly is the common pick in the first (for good reason), if the board looked as it did in the second round though Andy Reid would get all gushy over the DLinemen left on the board (Crick, Ta’amu) those would probably be the picks also considering the amount of good WR that were still left. The 3rd round has a large pool of players left the the Eagles would Love at that point:
    Nick Foles, QB
    Nick Toon, WR
    Reuben Randle, WR
    Coryell Judie, CB
    Keenan Robinson, OLB
    Chris Polk, RB
Can’t we just get all of them?

I could see us using all 4 picks to an advantage

Joe Adams would have to actually, you know, be able to catch the ball, to differentiate himself from the other receivers on our team. His speed is really all we need when we address the WR this year. It would be huge if Sam had enough time to actually put the ball where our WRs can catch it, since obviously, their hands must be the wrong place to put it. Maybe he can just lob it right down their throats.

Anyhoo I think I’m liking Reiff more than Martin but Martin is probably more ready to help with our run blocking, too. Cox is great and Brown? Well hell yeah!

Can never have enough pass rushers. And with the way your first round plays out, he is the best player available in my mind. Good to see someone other than Burfict for a change.

Pairing Curry with Suggs and Kruger could be deadly.

by Mr MaLoR on Feb 6, 2012 11:53 PM EST up reply actions

Agreed. I still want Burfict, but this is a solid pick that hasn’t been really mocked to us that realistically could actually happen. Don’t really have a problem with any of the picks. Ideally my draft would be Burfict, Quick, Kelemete. Even though you have Kelemete listed as OT I think we would use him at G since he does have that ability.

I love Taylor. He had good games against 'Bama in both games last year. Including that incredible INT in the first one.

He’s got good range, and while he probably wouldn’t be able to cover a WR one-on-one, he has good vision, good physical attributes (his stock will rise at the combine I think), and is pretty smart. He should be one of those ballhawking safeties at the next level….especially if he learns from Ed Reed.

    Really interesting Bucs draft

The Claiborne pick is perfect, of course. Osemele is a huge upgrade over Trueblood. Maybe a bit early for a RT, but I think he’s a slipping first round talent and absolutely worth it at that spot. I like Sean Spence a lot too. It might be a hair early for him, but there is no arguing our need at LB and Spence is the best of what’s left by a good bit. I probably would have taken LaMichael James in that spot, but I would not be upset with Spence in the least.

by aakks on Feb 7, 2012 8:00 AM EST reply actions

Zach Brown would have been excellent

Lavonte David in the third was a near miss too. I think that’s a much better spot for him in the early third than the boilerplate mock him to us in the 2nd, which just seems way too early for my tastes.

by aakks on Feb 7, 2012 10:11 AM EST up reply actions

David is a fringe 1st round "talent" in terms of instincts and playmaking ability...but I don't know if his

body holds up in the NFL….he’s a LB playing in a very large safety’s body. Same deal with Spence. He’s a high 2nd rounder as well….but those concerns will push both of them down a bit

    Falcons:

good draft. It would be hard to pass up one of those top three TEs, esp. when some (Bunting for one) feel Orson Charles could be the best of the three. Mike Martin is a pretty good pick too, although I might have leaned toward Boykin.

    Pats fan here,

congrats man. The Brady-Manning rivalry is truly renewed.

I’m skeptical about the Pats going for Barron. There’s risk with him, and I question whether BB will want to go for another S that looks so similar to Merriweather. I’d say Michael Brockers, Peter Konz, or Alshon Jeffery but they’re already taken. I like Wright though.

One thing worth mentioning for all you mock-drafters; Pats will only use one of their 1st and one of their 2nd round picks. The other 1st and 2nd will get traded back/down and the Pats will dangle Brian Hoyer as trade bait for either a player or a mid-round pick.

    I'm not so sure,

think he’d rather aim for Markelle Martin, George Iloka, or Harrison Smith somewhere in the 2nd/3rd rounds. Pats got to upgrade their WR corps badly. There’s not going to really be anyone there after Welker who’s not getting younger, and Welker himself is truly a slot-receiver. Branch is looking worn out, the Ocho experiment failed, and after that it’s a bunch of big no-names who haven’t shown much.

    Denver

Really would be against the idea of drafting a no. 2 WR in the 1st round. I dont think he would improve the starting roster a great deal.

If Dontari Poe falls that far that would be a nice pick up.

Polk I am still not quite sure on. Does he enough gym/fitness work? Does he find the holes well enough? Was he limited by a poor O line. In the 3rd though wouldnt be too upset with that although would prefer Boykin in that spot with that board.

I went with the thinking that a Thomas-Jeffrey-Decker combo would be the best in the West...and having a big possession

guy would be a massive boon for Tebow. Jeffrey can use his body and his height to adjust to Tebow throwing on the run. Polk I actually have as a 2nd round talent that fell due to lack of RB need. He’s got a nice balance of power and speed, with moderate burst and could be a good complement to McGahee.

Kinda has too much size – you know, around the middle. I’ve also seen rumblings work ethic is a question mark. It’s possible in your scenario, he’s BPA but I’m just not on board. Given your first 24 picks, I’d much sooner go Dwayne Allen (Steve disagrees!) or Chase Minnifield. If I had to take a WR, I kinda like the speed of Kendall Wright. Poe would be great value in the 2nd as, i think would Polk in the 3rd.

Not liking it for the Jets

I’d surely grab Richardson if he’s there, but then that leaves OLB, and Chandler Jones doesn’t have the burst or speed to become a 3-4 OLB. Not to mention I think there are plenty of decent QBs later in the draft like Russell Wilson or cousins, so I feel like drafting Weeden in the third is a waste of a pick. I’d much rather hit S if hadn’t done so, with Winston Guy Jr. or perhaps Harrison Smith.

by JetKing55 on Feb 7, 2012 8:57 PM EST reply actions

That's fair enough. I think of Chandler Jones as Cameron Wake-esque. Not a perfect fit for the 3-4

but natural pass rushing talent. No great burst, but has enough power and agile enough to execute stunts and a few pass rushing moves to be good enough to be a force.

    Seahawks

Don’t like this draft for the Seahawks – doesn’t really address the primary need at all. Carroll stated a desire to improve front 7 speed in his end of year presser. Last year he said he wanted to beef up the oline and spent the first 2 picks on an RT and RG, so he’s not necessarily just blowing smoke.

Really don’t like Floyd b/c he’s not BPA and WR isn’t one of the more pressing needs – we have a #1 in Sidney Rice and I don’t think you take a #2 this early with so many other holes. Don’t like Tannehill b/c he’s not the “point guard” qb Carroll wants – he puts the ball in risky places too often and R2 is QBOTF land. Though I do like James as a back, I think they’d want to find another RB with a similar style to Lynch as a true backup and use Washington as the CoP guy. I’d look for a guy like Polk or Martin here or Ganaway from Baylor in the later rounds.

Given this board (and no trades, though they could certainly trade down in R1 for later picks), I’d expect them to pick something like:

    1.12) Ingram DE
    2.11) Spence WLB
    3.12) Osweiler/Cousins QB

    Jags = B+

    1. Coples = A
    2. Gilmore = A-
    3. Potter = C, rather have Nick Toon, Rueben Randle or even Cam Johnson, yes a second defensive end.

Randle is way overrated and I would hope he is not the 3rd round pick. He disappeared against the better defensive talent(Alabama)

we need to draft a receiver in one of the first three rounds. I like the three guys we got, but the only way I’d take that is if we pick up two very good WRs in FA and I don’t think that is very likely. However, these three players fill positions of need and would improve our team remarkably. It would be nice to see Gene add some more defensive talent so we can be set there for good.
