2012 NFL Draft: Dre Kirkpatrick's Drug Charge Dropped

Dre Kirkpatrick, one of the top cornerbacks available in the 2012 NFL Draft, will not be prosecuted for a marijuana possession charge, according to ESPN.

The former Alabama standout was considered by many to be a top ten draft before he was arrested on possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana on Jan. 17.

Kirkpatrick claimed to have no knowledge of the weed being in the car, and that may have lead to the charges being dropped.

"The guy who we gave a ride to came forward and signed an affidavit that the weed was his," Kirkpatrick told Liz Mullen. "I didn't even know it was there."

The dropped charges certainly helps Kirkpatrick's draft stock, but damage has still been done. Teams will be treading lightly with the 6-foot-2, second-team All-American in the pre-draft process.

Drug charges are often overblown, but what teams need to find out is how seriously this guy will be able to take football. Football is about to become a job for Kirkpatrick. He needs to prove to teams that he has learned from this and realizes the type of people he needs to surround himself with. This incident has probably cost him some money already.

I bet there would have been less controversy had he been arrested for DUI smh. What does that say about our society?

Aaron Rodgers, MVP.
The day LeBron James wins an NBA championship will be the day I stop watching NBA basketball. Needless to say, it looks like I'll be watching for quite a few more years.

Sounds like he offered one of his buddies a pretty fat check...

in exchange for signing an affidavit claiming it was his. Nice try, but this one is pretty easy to see right through.

Even if he did, so what? The only crime here is that people are still being f***** over for smoking weed.

Let's not get into this stupid debate

The fact is that no matter what your opinion on the subject it is illegal and to be a guy in his position doing something like rolling around with a significant amount of pot is a dumb thing to do and should raise questions about his maturity and decision making.

Stupidity

The number of people who do not do dumb things in college is smaller than the population of Dover, Delaware. “To err is human.”

I’m not looking for saints. I’m looking for football players. If they can show they know the limits to their freedom, if they show good general character and intelligence, I’m willing to overlook the stupid things. Giants have drafted a bunch of guys with these “question marks”, never had a hint of a problem with any of them. The vets help you grow up pretty quick – the change in scenery changes a lot.

My QB has 2 rings. Well, 3 if you want to get technical.

I agree

However, when a person does a dumb thing there are typicaly consequences for it. His consequence will likely be a slightly lower draft stock (mid to late 1st round as opposed to top 10). I’m not saying teams should crucify the kid, but they should still question the decision making of a guy who they’re are considering giving a multi-million dollar salary to when he does something like this.

Stupid is what stupid people are willing to waste our money on!
  • Why do you wish to continue to spend $50 billion a year to prosecute and cage your fellow citizens for choosing substances which are not more dangerous than those of which you yourself probably use and approve of, such as alcohol and tobacco?
  • Do you honestly expect the rest of us to look on passively while you waste another trillion dollars on this ruinously expensive garbage policy?
Why are you waging war on your own family, friends and neighbors?
  • Why are you so complacent with the fact that our once ‘proud and free’ nation now has the largest percentage of it’s citizenry incarcerated than any other on the entire planet?
  • Why are you helping to fuel a budget crisis to the point of closing hospitals, schools and libraries?
  • Why do you rejoice at wasting precious resources on prohibition related undercover work while rapists and murderers walk free, while additionally, many cases involving murder and rape do not even get taken to trial because law enforcement priorities are subverted by your beloved failed and dangerous policy?
  • Why are you such a supporter of the ‘prison industrial complex’ to the extent of endangering our nation’s children?
  • Will you graciously applaud when due to your own incipient and authoritarian approach, even your own child is caged and raped?

That was my first thought too

It is unfortunate for him if it is the truth, but teams can’t ignore that a payoff was possible.

So the other guy in the car was Tanard Jackson?

/rimshot

personally, I don’t see a problem if we get to regulating marijuana the way we regulate alcohol: with penalties for Driving Under the Influence, rehab for addicts, licensing of sellers, and age use restrictions. There, spoke my peace.

p.s. I don’t drink, smoke or use drugs. I just don’t see why we give beer/liquor a pass considering we had Prohibition… which didn’t stop drinking…

Time to shamelessly plug my book and short story!

i agree

20 year Vet here and i have never done drugs… and don’t drink or even smoke. But really they should just make that stuff legal and tax it. Would pay for the education system and plus some…. drop student loans… lower health care cost and legal fees etc…. and the police waste too much time chasing this…….wait i just figured out away to save the world… must be a dum idea never mind

This story does paint Kilpatrick in a better light. He just needs be very careful of who he hangs around. These kids once they go to the NFL have to make their circles alot smaller and limit it to family and people that are doing positive things.

As a former stoner I disagree

The one difference between drinking and getting high is that there is pretty much only one kind of drunk. You can drink whatever different type of alcohol you want and it will all give you pretty much the same sensation.

Getting high is different. There are many incredibly different types of highs and a pot high only scratches the surface. Speaking from experience, at first a pot high is new and great however if you get to the point of being a regular smoker like all things you build a tolerance towards it. When this happens the temptation to find something bigger, better or just different gets stronger every time you smoke. For a lot of people (myself included) their curiosity gives way to temptation and it can lead down a very bad path.

I am almost 2 years clean now but in all of my years of doing drugs I have known people who were or eventually became addicted to pills, coke, heroin even meth and all of them started of by “just smoking a little pot”. For this reason I will never be in favor of legalizing marijuana.

but

you’re confusing an addictive personality leading to hard drugs with cannabis use. If you had the need to escalate the buzz you would have gone harder no matter what substance you used early on. Cannabis itself doesn’t lead to any other drug use. I mental defect, of an addiction variety, is what does.

While his eyes in the mug shot look like he was chiefing it up alittle

As long as he realizes that once he is drafted he better stop than im not that concerned since hes still a very talented CB. Many good nfl players were busted for bud in college and have never been in trouble because of it with the league

I don't think you need an arrest or conviction..

To go slow with Kirkpatrick. He seems pretty tightly wound at the best of times.

Who's body is it anyway?

Not yet convinced that this magic plant can actually enhance and improve human abilities? Here are just a few of the many highly motivated athletes whose drug of choice is cannabis/marijuana:

  • Usain Bolt, the 2008 World Record holder of the 100 and 200 meter sprint.
  • Michael Phelps, the most decorated swimmer ever with 14 Olympic gold medals.
  • Tim Linecum, the National League baseball’s Cy Young Award winner for 2009.
  • Santonio Holmes, the Super Bowl XLII’s MVP.
  • Mark Stepnoski, two-time Super Bowl champion. “I’d rather smoke than take painkillers.”
  • Randy Moss, NFL single season touchdown reception record (23, set in 2007), and the NFL single-season touchdown reception record for a rookie (17, in 1998). Moss has founded, and financed many charitable endeavors including the the Links for Learning foundation, formed in 2008.
  • Ricky Williams, the Heisman Trophy Winner in 1998. Throughout his life, Williams has dealt with anxiety and depression. He used to advertise the prescription drug Paxil. However he later stated "Marijuana is 10 times better for me than Paxil."
  • Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the NBA’s all-time leader in points scored (38,387), games played, minutes played, field goals made, field goal attempts, blocked shots and defensive rebounds. During his career with the NBA’s Milwaukee Bucks and Los Angeles Lakers from 1969 to 1989, Abdul-Jabbar won six NBA championships and a record six regular season MVP Awards. He has a prescription to smoke marijuana in California, which he says he uses to control nausea and migraine headaches. He has been arrested twice for marijuana possession.
  • “I just let him know that most of the players in the league use marijuana and I have and do partake in smoking weed in the offseason” – Josh Howard, forward for the Dallas Mavericks. Howard admitted to smoking marijuana on Michel Irvin’s ESPN show.
  • “You got guys out there playing high every night. You got 60% of your league on marijuana. What can you do?” – Charles Oakley (Chicago Bulls, New York Knicks, Toronto Raptors, Washington Wizards and Houston Rockets)
  • “I personally know boxers, body builders, cyclists, runners and athletes from all walks of life that train and compete with the assistance of marijuana,” – WWE wrestler Rob Van Dam
  • Some of the best cricket players of all time, like Phil Tufnell and Sir Ian Botham, have admitted to regularly using marijuana to deal with stress and muscle aches. In 2001, half of South Africa’s cricket team was caught smoking marijuana with the team physiotherapist. They were celebrating a championship victory in the Caribbean.

phil tufnell and botham correction

Nobody their right mind could ever consider him one of the greatest cricketers of all time. He was one of the worst in international cricket when he playing.

He is also known as a player who had many issues in his life and is known to have abused drugs and alcohol. Read any autobiography by an England captain from the nineties And early naughties, they all mention this.

Botham is also know to have abused alcohol, sex and drugs. Every cricket fan knows not to challenge botham to a drinking competition. He is also known to have wasted his talents. He started off well and was simply the best player in the world during the 81 ashes BUT over his whole career wasted his talent. The fact that he is still a cricket legend shows how much talent he had but he could have been more.

I felt the need to correct you on this as I doubt there are many members of this site who follow cricket. Both of these guys let their vices get the better of them and it negatively impacted on their careers.

Smoking kills. If you're killed, you've lost a very important part of your life.

hang on let me put this through my handy dandy translator:

“The guy who we gave a ride to promised a huge lump sum payment to after the draft came forward and signed an affidavit that the weed was his,” Kirkpatrick told Liz Mullen. “I didn’t even know he didn’t realize that’s his responsibility when we first got pulled over.
