SB Nation Writers Mock Draft: Round 2, Pick #64

PITTSBURGH |
This writer did not send pick analysis. Sorry!
MTD thoughts: The gang from Behind the Steel Curtain didn't submit a pick. After center, I view Pittsburgh's needs as starting cornerback and depth along the defensive line and interior offensive line. Among those needs, Harris is easily the best prospect available.
This concludes the SB Nation writers mock draft.

SB Nation Writers Mock Draft: Round 2, Pick #63

ARIZONA |
Following the excellent selection of Chris Wells in the first round, Revenge of the Birds blogger cgolden is back up.
Last year the Cardinals made a surprising pick in the fifth round and took a little known running back from Richmond. This year they hope lightening strikes twice as they go back to Richmond and select Tim Hightower's former room mate, Lawrence Sidbury Jr. Coming into the draft the Cardinals had two big needs, a running back and improving the pass rush. The first round selection of Chris "Beanie" Wells took care of the former and Sidbury shores up the latter. He will have to learn how to play with his hand off the ground and how to play in space but his athletic ability suggest he'll be able to make the transition.
Given the depth at OLB currently, Sidbury won't be forced into early action and might not have much of an impact at all his rookie season, outside of special teams, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. A year learning his new responsibilities and refining his skill set should get him ready for a starting role once guys like Chike Okeafor and Bertrand Berry are gone.
MTD thoughts: Perfect drafting by cgolden. If Arizona follows a similar blueprint, there's no reason to doubt that the team will make it back to the playoffs this season.

TENNESSEE |
If Tennessee is up again, you know we're getting close to the end of the second round. Jimmy from Music City Miracles, take it away.
Barden is a little bit of an off the board choice here, but the Titans need a playmaking wide receiver. Barden is just that. Plus he hails from an off-the-map school, and the Titans love to take guys from such schools. He is a physical specimen at 6-6 220, and has good speed to go along with it, running a 4.51 40. With those numbers he would be in the discussion to go in the first round if he were from an SEC school instead of Cal Poly. He had a great 2008 campaign with 67 catches for 1,257 yards and 18 TDs and should be able to step in an make some plays in 2009.
MTD thoughts: Indeed, this is a reach, but a good one. Tennessee has to come away from this draft with a starting wide receiver, and Barden is an excellent option.

INDIANAPOLIS |
After getting a much-needed defensive tackle in the first round, BigBlueShoe of Stampede Blue is back up.
After the Colts parted ways with the great Marvin Harrison this off-season, a hole was created at the WR position. Yes, two first round players (Reggie Wayne and Anthony Gonzalez) occupy the starting WR spots, and the Colts have a first round-selected TE in Dallas Clark. They also have first round-selected Joseph Addai at running back, and several young receivers like Roy Hall and Pierre Garcon (who were drafted in 2007 and 2008, respectively). But if you know the Colts, you know their draft formula usually involves getting the best talent at the skill positions available. Why give the best QB in football, and the reigning MVP, mediocre talent at WR? It's a formula that has produced six straight 12-win seasons, a Super Bowl, and a butt load of other accolades.
Thus, when I see a solid WR prospect like Derrick Williams still sitting there late into the second round, I'm going to take him. His 40 time at the Combine might have been an error (4.58) as he ran a 4.37 at his Pro Day. He is very fast, blocks well in the running game (very important aspect for WRs in the Colts offense) and has top intangibles. Where he needs a little work is route-running. He doesn't seem to be "lazy" or disinterested in honing his craft, which is a big plus for Williams. Guys like Reggie Wayne and Peyton Manning will work him ragged, forcing him to clean up his routes and hone his pass catching. Mount Manning often explodes when his passes are dropped.
The Colts could fit him in as a slot receiver (Gonzalez is a better flanker than slot receiver), and also have him return kicks. All in all, he is a hard-working kid with loads of talent that needs a little refining. What better place to do that than Indy?
MTD thoughts: I like this pick and not just because the Colts offense is built around three-receiver sets. Williams would give Indianapolis a gadget kind of player, which the team hasn't really experimented with in the past. Plus, Williams can handle punt and kickoff return duties.

NEW YORK |
Another day of the SB Nation writers mock draft comes to a close with the latest pick from Big Blue View's EtVal.
I was really conflicted as to what to do with this pick. I have already taken a wide receiver (Darrius Heyward-Bey, 29) and offensive tackle (William Beatty, 45). I was sorely tempted to grab either Shonn Greene or Rashad Jennings, probably the best two running backs available. I felt like this pick needed to be defense, though, and Mickens seems to have the biggest upside of any of the defenders left at linebacker or in the secondary. Besides, the Giants lost Sam Madison, R.W. McQuarters can't cover anybody anymore, and the way the game is played now you can never have too many corners who can cover. This seemed like the best way to upgrade the depth on the defensive side of the ball.
MTD thoughts: This is a little bit of a reach for Mickens, who might not do well covering shifty slot receivers. I also like Victor Harris more, a player with a similar skillset.

Carolina Panthers |
After waiting longer than anyone in this mock draft, Jaxon from Cat Scratch Reader is up.
With the big QB Josh Freeman still on the board I’m sure my pick will not impress a certain very vocal section of my readers. Freeman leads the poll on my site seeking opinions on who to pick in this scenario. Yet I agree with John Fox; one bad, make that one terrible game by Jake Delhomme doesn’t negate all the big victories he has piloted for this franchise. I also think Delhomme represents the best chance for the Panthers to win in 2009 so I just cannot see spending our highest pick on a player who won’t see the field for at least one or two seasons. Also, though I love his size and athleticism, I’m not sold on Freeman being a can’t-miss prospect as his accuracy issues concern me.
Once I decided to pass on Freeman I moved to the defensive side of the ball, an easy call considering the Panther defense finished 18th in total defense and 20th against the run. With the release of CB Ken Lucas and the public promotion of Richard Marshall the Panthers are need of a nickel CB. The only problem is that the value CB’s at this pick like Alphonso Smith and Jarius Byrd slipped but didn’t slip far enough. I did briefly consider Macho Harris given I think he will be a great nickel corner I also think he might still be there in round 3. I then moved to the defensive line where I found DT’s Jarron Gilbert and Sen’Derrick Marks and DE Paul Kruger the highest rated remaining players.

NEW ENGLAND |
MaPatsFan of Pats Pulpit has taken Vontae Davis, William Moore and Phil Loadholt thus far in the draft. This is his final selection.
Sorry, no analysis was provided for this pick.
MTD thoughts: New England needs to find at least one pass rusher in this draft and that's what Brown can provide them. He'll have to transition from defensive end, but displayed the skills to do so.

BALTIMORE |
Another day closes here at the SB Nation writer's mock draft. Only a few picks remain with Baltimore up again after selecting Hakeem Nicks in the first round.
Baltimore Ravens select CB Jairus Byrd, Oregon. Byrd is a 5' 10", 200 pound junior declaring early for the NFL Draft. The All PAC-10 player lead the conference in interceptions in 2008 and totalled 17 picks in his college career. He is also the son of former San Diego Charger CB Gill Byrd.
MTD thoughts: Byrd is slightly a reach here, but he's a physical cornerback who could thrive in Baltimore's system.
